One of the highlights of this Summer, actually a highlight of the past few years of travelling was our visit to Alcatraz.
We had wanted to go to Alcatraz ever since we knew we were visiting San Francisco but unfortunately you have to book tour tickets months in advance (something we did not know!). We were told that they give away 150 tickets each morning at 7am on a first come, first serve basis. So we set our alarms for 4.30am and headed down to Pier 33 and joined the queue which was already 50 people strong. By 6.45 there were at least 200 people lined up. At 7 the ticket office opened and we were able to get tickets for the second tour of the day. We headed off for breakfast and returned 30 minutes before out departure time. To say I was excited was an understatement.
I could talk for hours about how much I enjoyed it and the audio tour from within the prison was phenomenal. I will let the pictures do the talking!
Well worth queuing up at 5.30am in the glorious San Francisco weather (4 degrees in a t-shirt and shorts!).
